What Is a Residential Treatment Program?

Addiction is a complex and chronic medical condition that can have incredibly harmful consequences. Each person who suffers from drug or alcohol addiction will experience the harsh side effects it causes differently. They may benefit from finding an addiction treatment plan tailored to their individual needs. For some, an intensive outpatient program is best to continue to go about their lives while receiving treatment. Still, for others, a residential addiction treatment center is necessary to ensure that they can constantly be under watch. This watchfulness is often for the patients’ own safety. If you believe that you or a loved one requires residential treatment, reach out to La Fuente Hollywood Recovery at 888.903.9898 today to discuss your options.

What Is Residential Treatment?

Residential addiction treatment aims to provide 24-hour supervision and structured medical care within a safe environment that is not a hospital. Unlike outpatient treatment programs, patients must remain in the facility and cannot return home or to work. Inpatient treatment programs usually offer counseling and other behavioral health services. Many support co-occurring disorders, depending on the person’s needs.

Is Residential Treatment for Me?

Residential treatment can be beneficial for many people. However, it is not for everybody. Residential treatment might be appropriate for you if any of these apply to you:

  • You have recurring issues with substance misuse
  • Have severe substance use disorders (SUDs)
  • Have co-occurring mental health disorders or other medical conditions
  • Do not require medically managed services

Inpatient treatment offers constant supervision to provide a safe place for people to recover. In residential treatment, you will receive ample support from both staff and peers to safely recover. While some residential treatment centers offer a certain level of medical monitoring, it is not common. Some examples of residential treatment programs include:

  • Short-term residential treatment programs (between three and six weeks)
  • Long-term residential treatment programs (between six and twelve months)
  • Sober living homes
  • Therapeutic communities (TCs)

Inpatient vs. Residential Treatment

Inpatient and residential treatment programs are relatively similar. However, they typically offer different levels of care. Some ways that they are different are:

Setting

Inpatient treatment typically occurs in a hospital or a specialized treatment facility. Residential treatment programs are usually not offered in a hospital setting. Instead, they are in a group living or communal home-like environment.

Length of the Program

Inpatient treatment is not usually used for long-term care but rather short-term, acute care. Residential treatment can be more flexible and range from a few months to a year. The length of a person’s stay also depends on their progress within their respective facility.

Levels of Residential Treatment

There are different levels of residential care designed to meet the diverse needs of individuals. Often, the different levels of care work to prepare a person for transitioning to a lower level of care. This preparation also works if a patient isn’t progressing at their current level of treatment and needs more attention.

To be placed in the appropriate care level for your specific needs, one of our addiction treatment professionals will conduct an assessment that examines your:

  • Substance use history
  • Physical health
  • Mental health
  • History of relapse
  • Motivation for recovery
  • Current living situation
  • Support structure

After this assessment, you will be placed in a level of care. The five levels of care are:

  • Early intervention
  • Outpatient services
  • Intensive outpatient or partial hospitalization services
  • Residential or inpatient services
  • Medically managed intensive inpatient services
