Making friends as an LGBTQ person isn’t always easy. For much of history, being out meant risking everything, leaving few safe spaces to connect. That’s why gay bars became a cornerstone of queer social life—a legacy that continues today.
But for those who are sober, this can be isolating. It’s also concerning given that LGBTQ people are more likely to struggle with alcohol use than other populations.
Fortunately, there are plenty of ways to build LGBTQ community without relying on bars. Here are seven great options.
1. Social Media
Social media is one of the easiest ways to connect with other LGBTQ people. Here’s how to find community on different platforms:
- Facebook – Search “LGBTQ” + [Your City] or “Queer Exchange” + [Your City] to find local groups. You can also search for LGBTQ groups based on specific hobbies or interests. Engaging with posts and comments is a great way to start conversations.
- Instagram – Follow LGBTQ-related hashtags, engage with posts, and respond to stories to start building connections.
- TikTok – Use the Discover tool to find LGBTQ content, comment on videos, and message users you connect with.
2. Meetup
Meetup is a great way to find in-person and virtual events based on shared interests—think LGBTQ book clubs, improv troupes, hiking groups, and more. A quick search for terms like LGBTQ, queer, lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender can connect you with people in your area.
And even if a group isn’t explicitly LGBTQ-focused, chances are you’ll still find queer folks just by getting involved in something you’re passionate about.
3. Dating Apps
Dating apps aren’t just for hookups. Many also help LGBTQ people connect platonically. For example, Bumble offers a BFF mode for finding friends, while Lex fosters connections through personal ads rather than photos. Taimi combines dating with a broader social networking experience, and Scruff includes features like Venture (for connecting with locals while traveling) and an events calendar to meet people beyond the dating scene.
4. LGBTQ Sports Leagues
LGBTQ sports leagues offer a great way to stay active while building community. Whether you’re a seasoned athlete or just looking for a fun way to meet people, there’s likely a league near you. Many welcome all skill levels and focus on camaraderie over competition.
Try searching for LGBTQ leagues in your area, or check out national organizations like
- OutLoud Sports for kickball, dodgeball, volleyball, and more
- Stonewall Sports which has chapters across the U.S.
- International Gay and Lesbian Football Association (IGLFA) for soccer enthusiasts
5. Municipal LGBTQ+ Websites & Advocacy Groups
Local LGBTQ resources are a great way to find organizations that align with your identity, connect with your community, and make friends.
In Los Angeles, the Los Angeles LGBT Center offers social programs, health services, and cultural events, while Bienestar provides advocacy and support for Latinx individuals. API Equality-LA strengthens and empowers queer Asian and Pacific Islander communities through education, organizing, and social support.
La Fuente Helps Build LGBTQ Community
At La Fuente Hollywood Treatment Center, we believe that recovery isn’t just about sobriety, it’s about connection. That’s why we prioritize community, helping LGBTQ people build lasting friendships and support networks.
One way we do this is through our Alumni Program, which keeps former clients engaged by mentoring and supporting new residents. We also host a weekly 12-step meeting open to the community that provides a welcoming space to connect, share experiences, and support one another in recovery.
