Research points to higher rates of substance abuse in the LGBTQ community compared to the general population. Teens and young adults who identify as LGBTQ are especially at risk. Key factors for this include marginalization, discrimination, and societal stigma. Unfortunately, not all addiction treatment providers recognize the value of delivering treatment that is inclusive for people who identify as LGBTQ. Treatment that fails to honor someone’s full humanity alongside the entirety of the challenges they face will never provide life transformation. That is why La Fuente Hollywood prioritizes inclusivity across all treatment options, including our LGBTQ partial hospitalization program (PHP).

What Is an LGBTQ PHP?
An LGBTQ PHP is structurally the same as any other PHP. Clients attend treatment for between four and six hours, five days weekly. PHPs tend to last for one month, after which people transition to outpatient treatment or other forms of aftercare. PHP differs from inpatient treatment because it does not require an overnight stay. People in treatment return home daily and may continue working or attending school. Like traditional PHP, an LGBTQ PHP involves group and individual therapy, medication management, educational services, and support groups.
The difference is in how those methods and services are delivered. First, an LGBTQ PHP considers an understanding of the unique challenges and stressors that the LGBTQ community faces. Many people, especially in the LGBTQ community, fail to access treatment due to societal stigma, discrimination, or fear. Moreover, those who seek treatment may have a poor experience because their treatment provider does not respect who they are and does not customize services to meet their needs.
The LGBTQ PHP at La Fuente Hollywood helps remedy these issues. Feeling understood and valued is a prerequisite to achieving healing and recovery.
The Importance of LGBTQ-Inclusive PHP
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) developed a manual that outlines the treatment and approaches that specifically address the needs of the LGBTQ community. For a provider to offer an LGBTQ-inclusive PHP, they must abide by this manual at a minimum.
But that is not all. Since group therapy often plays a significant role in a PHP, creating physically and psychologically safe spaces is necessary for it to be effective. Members of the LGBTQ community who attend treatment in non-inclusive spaces may find group therapy triggering and challenging. In contrast, LGBTQ-inclusive PHPs ensure that each participant in group therapy is honored and valued for who they are and how they choose to identify. Inclusion is mindful in the staff’s language and inclusive facilities such as gender-neutral bathrooms.
La Fuente Hollywood also customizes treatment plans to ensure each person receives the type of support they need to address their unique challenges. Many times, those who attend a PHP struggle with a co-occurring disorder. That is especially true of people who identify as LGBTQ. As a result, La Fuente Hollywood provides comprehensive dual diagnosis treatment that holds LGBTQ concerns at the forefront.
